The main cast of the legendary sci-fi franchise 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' has garnered attention by candidly sharing their feelings about Season 3 and the pressure of carrying on 60 years of history in an interview with NPR. In the NPR interview aired on the 22nd, the actors openly discussed the challenges and rewards of reinterpreting the classic 'Star Trek' legacy in a modern context.
Anson Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike, emphasized the uniqueness of his character, stating, 'Pike's uniqueness is that he is the most selfless character among all the captains I've seen so far.' He revealed that his past connection with Patrick Stewart from 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' during college helped him understand the passion of the fans.
Mount particularly highlighted the importance of fan service by sharing an episode where a fan approached him during a meal and interrupted the interview, recalling that Stewart later said with a smile that everyone loves to have their backs patted.
Veteran actress Carol Kane, who joined as an engineer, candidly expressed, 'I knew almost nothing about Star Trek. I thought the production team had made a mistake.' However, the production team welcomed her joining, stating, 'It will actually help the character.'
Ethan Peck, who plays the young Spock, recalled a conversation with Jonathan Frakes from 'The Next Generation,' where he was told, 'There are only about 40-50 people in the regular series bridge crew. It's a really exclusive club.' He expressed both the pressure and pride of portraying such an iconic character.
The series seeks a perfect harmony between classic and modern, such as reimagining the Gorn, which was depicted in the original 'Star Trek' with a rubber lizard suit, using modern special effects. Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman explained, 'We continue to serve as a lens that allows us to understand issues in a less threatening way by utilizing the safe distance of the genre.'
Although Paramount+ announced that the series will conclude with Season 5, Goldsman hinted at the possibility of a spin-off, stating, 'There are still many stories left to be told on the Enterprise.' 'Strange New Worlds,' which inherits the spirit of 'Star Trek' with a 60-year tradition, is setting a new milestone in sci-fi drama, beloved by a new generation of fans through bold challenges and innovations.
