Showbox (CEO Shin Ho-jung) announced on the 11th that it has signed a strategic business cooperation agreement for joint film production with KT Studio Genie (CEO Jung Geun-wook). There is great interest in what new changes this alliance will bring to the Korean film industry.

According to this agreement, the two companies will jointly invest, produce, and distribute a total of 10 commercial films over the next three years. This strategy aims to inject new vitality into a market where investment has shrunk by establishing a new investment and production structure that jointly invests 50% of the total production cost. The two companies will maximize synergy by dividing roles in their respective areas of expertise, and especially create an environment where mid-to-low budget commercial films with various genres and storytelling can be actively produced, providing more opportunities for new directors and writers, which is expected to positively impact the balanced growth of the Korean film industry.

Showbox will be responsible for domestic distribution and marketing. As a major domestic investment and distribution company, Showbox has distributed hit Korean films such as 〈The Drug King〉(2024), 〈A Taxi Driver〉(2017), 〈Assassination〉(2015), and 〈The Thieves〉(2012), and will maximize the market competitiveness of its works based on the distribution know-how and theater network accumulated over nearly 30 years.

KT Studio Genie will enhance production efficiency by incorporating AI technology into pre-visualization, which visualizes key scenes in advance. Additionally, based on its experience as the largest integrated rights holder in the country, it will promote domestic secondary rights business and overseas sales, and will be responsible for distribution across various platforms such as IPTV and OTT.

Meanwhile, this agreement is expected to be an important turning point in seeking new avenues for the Korean film market and presenting an innovative business model. The combination of Showbox's market expertise and KT Studio Genie's technological innovation is expected to provide audiences with a differentiated cinematic experience and contribute to securing the diversity of Korean films and expanding their base through fresh attempts in various genres that reflect audience trends.

Showbox CEO Shin Ho-jung stated, "The proven investment and distribution capabilities of Showbox and the innovative production methods of KT Studio Genie will synergize to provide audiences with a new cinematic experience," and added, "We will enrich the spectrum of Korean films through fresh planning in various genres." He further expressed, "We expect that the collaboration between the two companies will inject new vitality into the Korean film market."

KT Studio Genie CEO Jung Geun-wook stated, "We have laid the groundwork for a full-scale entry into the film market through our partnership with Showbox, and we plan to introduce a model that minimizes production risks and maximizes the quality of works by incorporating AI technology throughout the entire film production process," and added, "We are currently planning multiple projects and aim to start production on our first work within this year."
