German-born cult icon, legendary actor Udo Kier passes away at 81

Legendary actor Udo Kier passed away at the age of 81 on November 23 (local time) at his home in Palm Springs, USA. His partner, artist Delbert McBride, confirmed the news of his death.

Born in 1944 in a hospital in Cologne, Germany, during the Allied bombing at the end of World War II, Kier had a dramatic start to life. He moved to London at the age of 18 to begin his acting career and established himself as a unique cult icon by appearing in over 200 films throughout his life.

Collaboration with Andy Warhol's horror masterpieces

In the early 1970s, Kier gained international fame through his collaboration with pop artist Andy Warhol. His notable works include the innovative horror films 'Frankenstein' (1973), directed by Paul Morrissey and produced by Warhol, and 'Blood for Dracula' (1974).

He later collaborated on several projects with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder and gained widespread recognition among American audiences by starring alongside River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves in Gus Van Sant's 'My Own Private Idaho' in 1991. Notably, he maintained a lifelong collaborative relationship with director Lars von Trier, appearing in several provocative works such as 'Melancholia' and 'Nymphomaniac'.

Active until the end

Kier appeared in Hollywood blockbusters such as 'Blade', 'Ace Ventura', and 'Armageddon', and was featured in Madonna's 1992 photo book 'Sex', showcasing his presence across various artistic fields including film, video games, and music videos.

His last work is 'Secret Agent', which won the Best Actor award at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and is also Brazil's entry for the 2026 Academy International Feature Film Award.

Kier publicly embraced his gay identity throughout his life and was beloved in the community as a regular attendee of the Palm Springs Film Festival. Colleagues in the film industry remember him as an actor with "incredible energy and strength" and expressed deep condolences.
