Jafar Panahi's New Work 'It Was Just an Accident' Achieves Three Wins at Gotham Awards... Iranian Authorities' Suppression Continues

Iranian master director Jafar Panahi's new work 〈It Was Just an Accident〉 has once again proven its artistic value by sweeping three awards at the 2025 Gotham Awards, following the Palme d'Or at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. However, even in this moment of glory, the suppression by Iranian authorities continues, raising concerns among filmmakers worldwide.

According to Green Narae Media, at the 2025 Gotham Awards held in New York on December 1 (local time), 〈It Was Just an Accident〉 achieved the remarkable feat of winning Best Director, Best Screenplay, and International Feature Film awards. This win signals a green light for the film's Oscar campaign. Currently, it is strongly predicted to be nominated in major categories including International Feature Film, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

During the awards ceremony, director Jafar Panahi mentioned "filmmakers who, silently and without any support, sometimes risk everything they have, holding onto only their belief in truth and humanity, and never putting down their cameras," and expressed a heavy acceptance speech, hoping that this tribute would be seen as a small homage to all filmmakers who continue to create and exist despite being deprived of the right to be seen and heard.

However, despite the accolades on the international stage, the situation in his home country of Iran remains bleak. Panahi's lawyer, Mostafa Nili, recently revealed that the Iranian authorities sentenced the director to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban, along with a prohibition on joining political and social organizations, through a trial in absentia on charges of 'propaganda against the regime.' This is interpreted as an attempt to restrict the director's activities while he is currently campaigning for the Oscars. Panahi's team plans to immediately file an appeal.

Meanwhile, 〈It Was Just an Accident〉, which premiered in South Korea on October 1, has surpassed 40,000 viewers, an unusual achievement for an art film, and continues to enjoy long-term success at the box office.
