Actor Jo Jin-woong (49) has abruptly suspended his acting career of 21 years due to the 'juvenile offender controversy'. On the 6th, his agency, People Entertainment, announced, "I humbly accept all criticism and will cease all activities as of today," adding, "I will do my best to reflect on myself to stand upright as a human being in the future." This decision came just a day after allegations surfaced that he committed a crime during high school and received juvenile protection measures.

Jo Jin-woong, who has been loved for his just and upright image, shocked the industry and fans with his past actions. He received praise for his realistic performances as a detective in dramas like 〈Signal〉 and films like 〈The Outlaws〉 and 〈Drug King〉. He also appeared as an independence fighter in several films and participated as a national special envoy in the repatriation of General Hong Beom-do's remains in 2021, and represented the reading of the pledge to the flag at this year's Liberation Day ceremony.

Jo Jin-woong, who began acting in the theater troupe 'Dongnyeok' as a graduate of the Department of Theater and Film at Kyungsung University in 1996, officially debuted in 2004 with 〈The Cruel History of Maljukgeori〉. He built his filmography through films like 〈The Chaser〉 (2006), the drama 〈The Sons of Sol Pharmacy〉 (2009), and films like 〈The Outlaws: The Age of Bad Guys〉 (2012) and the ten million viewer film 〈Roaring Currents〉 (2014).

In particular, he received great love for his role as the strong-willed and just detective Lee Jae-han in the 2016 tvN drama 〈Signal〉. After its conclusion, there was a flood of requests for a sequel, and the long-awaited sequel 〈Second Signal〉 is set to be released in the first half of next year, ten years later. However, it remains uncertain whether the airing schedule will change due to Jo Jin-woong's past controversy.

Jo Jin-woong also played a detective in 〈Drug King〉 (2018), 〈Drug King 2〉 (2023), and 〈The Outlaws〉 (2022), and acted as a prosecutor in 〈Black Money〉 (2019). Based on this experience, he was also the narrator for the currently airing SBS special documentary 〈War on Crime〉, but immediately after his retirement announcement, SBS replaced the narrator and is currently revising the existing footage.

His roles as an independence fighter in films like 〈General Kim Chang-soo〉 (2017) and 〈Assassination〉 (2015) led to his participation in the national special envoy activities for the repatriation of General Hong Beom-do's remains in 2021. Jo Jin-woong accompanied the entire process from the repatriation ceremony in Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, to the ceremony at the National Cemetery in Daejeon. KBS 1TV aired a documentary titled 〈National Special Envoy Jo Jin-woong, Bringing Back General Hong Beom-do〉, but this video has now been switched to private on YouTube.

Meanwhile, amid the cold public opinion, some argue that the original purpose of juvenile law should be considered. Han In-seop, an honorary professor at Seoul National University's Law School, pointed out on social media, "Jo Jin-woong made mistakes during his youth and received appropriate legal sanctions."

He continued, "It is commendable that the boy did not sink into his dark past and worked hard for decades to gain social recognition," and argued, "He can still be an excellent guide and model for teenagers who are still wandering in darkness." Considering that the purpose of juvenile law is to correct antisocial behavior and assist healthy growth, it is inappropriate to criticize someone solely based on their past juvenile protection history.
