The live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic ‘Moana,’ beloved around the world, has finally lifted the curtain.
On the 24th (local time), Disney instantly released the first teaser trailer for the live-action film ‘Moana (Moana)’, in which Dwayne Johnson transforms into the legendary demigod ‘Maui’.
Dwayne Johnson’s return… Praise for “Maui, in the flesh”
The biggest highlight of this live-action version is, without a doubt, Dwayne Johnson’s casting. In the 2016 original animated film, he provided the voice performance for Maui. This time, in the live-action movie, he stepped into the role himself—portraying Maui with his full-body tattoos and the signature hook—delivering an overwhelming visual presence. In the trailer, Dwayne Johnson simultaneously exudes his trademark humor and powerful charisma, satisfying fans’ expectations for the original.
The Arrival of a New Moana, “Catherine Laga’aia”
For the lead role of Moana, newcomer actress Catherine Laga’aia was chosen, showcasing a fresh kind of charm. In the trailer, she perfectly captured Moana’s courageous side as she prepares to set sail against the backdrop of a vast ocean. Also, Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original, will participate in this film as a producer, adding extra support to help elevate the film’s overall quality.

Overwhelming visuals and recreating the emotion of the original
The released trailer vividly brings to life the blue waters of the South Pacific and the mysterious island scenery in live action. In particular, scenes such as Maui’s transformation abilities and the moments when the ocean spirits move were depicted as even more lively than animation through cutting-edge CG technology. There’s also growing curiosity about how the original’s hit songs—like ‘You’re Welcome’—will be reinvented in the live-action version.
Set to hit theaters worldwide in 2026
Directed by Thomas Kail, the live-action ‘Moana’ is currently pushing full steam ahead on post-production. Through his own social media, Dwayne Johnson expressed his deep affection for the film, saying, “It’s an honor to be able to introduce the Polynesian culture that’s my roots to the world in live action.”
