A First-Time Director’s Glamorous Return: Cannes Invitation for John Travolta’s Directorial Debut

“Pulp Fiction”’s unforgettable star “John Travolta” is back on the Croisette with exciting news that will surprise everyone. It’s the release of his directorial debut. Officially invited to the “Cannes Film Festival” premiere section, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach (Propeller One-Way Night Coach)” is adapted from the book of the same title that he published in 1997, drawing on a deep love for airplanes that traces back to his childhood. He’s also active as a professional pilot.

“Apple Original Films” is producing this meaningful work, scheduled to have its worldwide premiere at the Théâtre Débussy of the Palais des Festivals, with “John Travolta” attending in person.

A Legendary Acting Career Spanning Decades, Powered by an Unending Passion for Aviation

“John Travolta” has previously visited Cannes with three films: “Pulp Fiction” (1994) and “The Fan” (1997), which competed in past competitions, and “Primary Colors” (1998), which was screened out of competition. A renowned actor with two Academy Award nominations and three Golden Globe and Emmy wins, he has firmly established himself as an icon of pop culture through acclaimed works such as “Saturday Night Fever” (1977), “Grease” (1978), “Blow Out” (1981), and “Hairspray” (2007).

At 72, the actor has built a diverse filmography of more than 70 titles over the course of half a century, and he carries a lifelong passion for aviation. Growing up by observing airplanes at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, he began flying at 15 and obtained his first pilot’s license at 22. He currently holds piloting qualifications for the Boeing 707, 737, and 747, as well as the Bombardier Global Express, and he is also the first civilian pilot to have flown an Airbus A380. With more than 9,000 hours of flight time to his name, he has even showcased his passion for flying on screen in films such as “My Life Story” (1989) and “Broken Arrow” (1996).

Based on the Same-Title Book Published in 1997: Revisiting the Golden Age of Aviation

About 30 years ago, his passion for flying led to the publication of a book he wrote and illustrated himself for his son. Drawing from memories of his own childhood, the story sets off on a nostalgic journey against aviation’s golden age, carefully capturing the one-of-a-kind experiences of a boy who loves airplanes, Jeff (played by “Clark Shatwell”), and his mother (played by “Kelly Ebiston-Quinet”) as they embark on a one-way trip to Hollywood.

Magical and astonishing moments—onboard meals, charming flight attendants (“Ella Bleu Travolta” and “Olga Hoffmann”), unexpected stopovers, passengers full of personality, and the splendor of first class—shape the boy’s vision of his future. “Propeller One-Way Night Coach” was co-produced by “John Travolta”’s JTP Films and Kids at Play, and its quality was elevated with “John Travolta” alongside “Jason Berger” and “Amy Laslett” serving as producers.

After premiering at the “Cannes Film Festival”, the film is scheduled for an exclusive worldwide release on “Apple TV+” on May 29, 2026.
