Tony Leung-starring masterpiece 〈A City of Sadness〉 heads to Korean theaters in May.
Director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s signature work 〈A City of Sadness〉 has been confirmed for release in South Korea in May. Capturing the tragedy of a family that crumbled before state violence, 〈A City of Sadness〉 won the Golden Lion at the 46th Venice International Film Festival, marking a milestone for Taiwan’s film industry. Along with the release announcement, the teaser poster and trailer were unveiled, thrilling the audiences who had been waiting.
〈A City of Sadness〉 has never previously had an official theatrical release in South Korean theaters, and it was only shown last year in a limited run through Seoul Art Cinema and CGV Art House. Even though the film has completed digital restoration after many years, in countries other than Taiwan, full-scale re-releases were not carried out, meaning South Korean audiences could only see it in extremely limited showings. With this official release, audiences who missed out on advance tickets back then will finally be able to experience 〈A City of Sadness〉 in theaters.
〈A City of Sadness〉—identified by lead actor Tony Leung as the film he wanted to show Korean audiences again when he visited as part of the 27th Busan International Film Festival—will be available in theaters this coming May.
