Sharp Intellect in Korean Hip-Hop Becomes a Star

Rapper 'Jerryk' (birth name Kim Jin-il) who captivated hip-hop fans with a keen look at the realities of Korean society has died. According to the bereaved family, the late artist passed away on the 27th while battling 'Glioblastoma', a type of malignant brain tumor, for about two years. He was 42 years old.

From a Symbol of Underground Hip-Hop to the Head of an Independent Label

Born in 1984, during his time as a student in the Department of Journalism and Information Studies at Seoul National University, in 2001 he took his first steps into the underground hip-hop scene by forming the rap duo 'Ro Qwanz' with fellow rapper Meikxens, his high school classmate. Later, he made his mark as a founding member of the legendary hip-hop crew 'Soul Company,' building a firm level of recognition.

His path as a solo artist was just as distinctive. Through the full-length debut album 'King of Kings' released in 2008, he directly called out human nature and social contradictions with unfiltered language, earning the labels of both sharp-tongued critic and 'King of Kings' within the hip-hop world. In 2011, he personally founded the independent label 'Days Alive,' nurturing younger talent and leading musical experiments.

A Musical Legacy Encompassing Popularity and Artistic Merit

His musical achievements are also widely recognized. His third full-length album, Reality, and his fourth album title track, Call Center, each earned nominations for the 'Korea Popular Music Awards' in the categories of Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album and Best Song, proving both mainstream appeal and artistic value. In 2020, he released his fifth full-length album Home, expressing a wish for everyday peace, demonstrating a broad musical spectrum.

Even while battling illness, he never let go of his passion for music. Now, condolences from fellow musicians and fans continue to pour in for his passing. His wake has been arranged at the Severance Hospital funeral home in Sinchon, and the funeral service is expected to be held on the 29th.
