The webtoon “Gwang-an,” which gained popularity in the domestic and international romance genre, is being adapted into a short drama. Lezhin Snacks, a short drama platform, announced on the 28th that it has confirmed production of its original series 〈Gwang-an〉, and that after finishing all filming on the 16th, it has begun post-production.
The source webtoon “Gwang-an” (Art by Sora, Written by Yook Mi-hwa, Original by Ra-hye) is a global hit intellectual property (IP) that ranked No. 1 in the romance genre for three consecutive years on Lezhin US. The short drama to be produced this time will depict a palace romance between Crown Prince ‘Hyun’ (Lee Hyun), who was imprisoned in Seogung amid power struggles, and ‘Eun-woo,’ an assassin who infiltrates to murder him.
The casting lineup includes Sungjoon, Chuu, Moon Ji-hoon (Swings), and Kim Eung-soo. Sungjoon will play Crown Prince ‘Hyun,’ a character with crazed eyes, portraying a three-dimensional figure with inner wounds. Chuu has been cast as ‘Eun-woo,’ who hides that he is an assassin and disguises himself as a court lady, and is expected to showcase both action and emotional acting. Moon Ji-hoon will take on the role of ‘Nam-hyeol,’ the Crown Prince’s bodyguard, while Kim Eung-soo will portray ‘Young-sang Da-gam,’ the counterpart who forms a tense standoff, heightening the drama’s suspense.
Direction is handled by Director Jo Bae-ron, who directed the film 〈Gwaegiman-sun〉 and the Lezhin Snacks short drama 〈Neighbors Not in This World: Vampire Boyfriends〉. Director Jo plans to deliver a well-made palace romance by capturing the visuals that faithfully bring out each character’s role.
After post-production, the short drama 〈Gwang-an〉 is set to be released exclusively through the Lezhin Snacks platform. Attention is on what kind of results the proven source IP and the fresh casting combination will achieve in the global short drama market.
