Kim Jaejoong’s Shamanism Occult! “Shrine: Whispers of a Malevolent Spirit” Opens June 17

Kim Jaejoong-starring film 〈Shrine: Whispers of a Malevolent Spirit〉 will be released on June 17.

The distributor, Roa&Co Holdings Co., Ltd., confirmed the film 〈Shrine: Whispers of a Malevolent Spirit〉’s release date as June 17, and released the first poster and the main trailer on the 12th. This shamanism occult horror movie tells the story of three college students who went to investigate a closed shrine in Kobe, Japan, after a student party went missing, and how Park Soo-budang (Myungjin, played by Kim Jaejoong) digs into it and faces mysterious entities.

The first poster released this time features an old torii gate and the atmosphere of a ruined shrine in the woods, along with the line “Something started to be heard,” revealing the film’s mood. In the main trailer also unveiled together, viewers can see scenes of college students disappearing without any clue as to why, and Myungjin—who receives a call—joining her junior, Yumi (played by Gong Seong-ha), and Pastor Hanju (played by Go Yoon-jun) as they head to Japan and pursue the case.

This is the first Korean directorial work by Japanese director Makikiri Kazuyoshi, who previously directed works such as 〈Yoko’s Journey〉 and 〈#Manhole〉. It combines Korea’s folk shaman beliefs (shamanism) with Japan’s indigenous beliefs and horror elements, and was filmed as an all-location production in Kobe, Japan.

Singer and actor Kim Jaejoong takes on the role of the protagonist ‘Myungjin,’ while Gong Seong-ha—who appeared in dramas such as 〈Those Who Read the Mind of Evil〉 and 〈Dr. Slump〉—plays ‘Yumi,’ Myungjin’s manager. Go Yoon-jun, active in theater and musical productions, makes his screen debut as Pastor ‘Hanju.’

The film 〈Shrine: Whispers of a Malevolent Spirit〉 will have an exclusive release in Korea at CGV theaters on June 17.
