BTS Raises Grammy Expectations With New “Asian Pop” Category, First Win Looks Promising

Next year’s Grammy Awards will add an “Asian Pop” category, fueling hopes that BTS and other South Korean acts will win for the first time

For years, "the Grammy Awards" has sat atop Western cultural dominance as the most firmly fortified stronghold. It marked a historic turning point as Asian melodies, once dismissed as a fringe of the mainstream music market, moved into the heart of global cultural power.

Cracks in a Solid White Citadel, Asian Pop Moves Into the Mainstream System

On the 16th (local time), major foreign outlets including ABC in the United States reported that beginning with next year’s 69th awards ceremony, "Best Asian Pop Music Performance"—along with five other categories—will be introduced across the board. This is more than just an expansion of award categories. It signals that the U.S. mainstream music industry has officially recognized the worldwide impact of music rooted in Asian languages, including "K-pop", J-pop, and C-pop. It underscores the point that the Recording Academy, which has long clung to evaluation standards centered on the English-speaking world, could no longer ignore Asia’s explosive growth in popular music and the shifting movement of cultural capital.

Above all, the decision opens a meaningful path for South Korean artists—such as "BTS" and "BLACKPINK’s Rosé"—who have repeatedly knocked on the door of the Grammy’s unspoken ceiling. The earlier narrative, in which they had to settle for disappointment after multiple nomination attempts ran into the barrier of conservative voting tendencies, is now being transformed into a stage where they can receive a proper aesthetic assessment within a new category. Gold Derby, a U.S. media outlet specializing in entertainment forecasts, also offered a positive outlook, saying that such a structural change will sharply raise the odds of "K-pop artists" winning.

The Grammys are also trying to secure flexibility that fits the times, including raising the nomination limit for "Best New Artist" from the current three times to four, and easing criteria for the proportion of new recordings on an album. The 69th awards ceremony, scheduled for Feb. 7 next year, is not merely a place that decides who takes home the trophy. It will serve as a historic rite (祭儀) in which the world witnesses a massive social phenomenon: the dismantling of Western-centrism and the coexistence of a diversified global culture.
