The film 〈Assassin(s)〉 confirmed its release for the 2026 Chuseok holiday and unveiled two launch posters on the 30th, with production and distribution handled by Hive Media Corp.
〈Assassin(s)〉 is a mystery investigative drama about the first lady shooting that took place during the Liberation Day celebration on August 15, 1974 — an incident that was broadcast live across the country. The film uses cinematic imagination to portray the people who struggle to expose the suspicions and forces hiding behind the official record. It is directed by Heo Jin-ho, whose credits include 〈The Last Princess〉, 〈Cheonmun: Asking the Sky〉 and 〈Christmas in August〉.
The lead cast and their roles were also announced. Yoo Hae-jin plays Detective Cheol-gu, who handled security at the scene and comes to doubt the official findings, driving him to dig for the truth. Park Hae-il plays Jae-hwan, the head of a newspaper's social affairs desk who pursues the truth despite outside pressure. Lee Min-ho plays Young-il, a rookie reporter who witnesses the scene firsthand and relentlessly investigates what happened.
The film has also assembled a prominent production team. Led by Hive Media Corp., known for producing bold, modern-history films such as 〈Seoul Spring〉 and 〈The Man Standing Next〉, the project enlists cinematographer Lee Mo-gae (who worked on 〈Seoul Spring〉 and 〈Exhumation〉) and lighting director Lee Seong-hwan. They are joined by production designer Kim Byung-han and VFX supervisor Jung Jae-hoon to raise the film's level of completion.
The two launch posters released with the announcement suggest the era's tense atmosphere and the suspicions surrounding the incident. Both feature the phrase "August 15, 1974, the first lady shooting" along with images of a hand holding a pistol and a black-and-white stage scene.
Billed as the first film adaptation of the true story, 〈Assassin(s)〉 is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide during the 2026 Chuseok season.
