“Comedy Philosophies Reborn by Students’ Inventive Homage,” Shattering the Mold

Forget the dull kind of tributes. A living legend of South Korea’s comedy world, 'Jeon Yoo-sung', will be met with daring, dazzling homages from his juniors that light up Busan’s night. The organizing committee of the 'Busan International Comedy Festival' (hereafter 'BUCOPe') has officially announced that at the upcoming 14th edition, it will put on the unprecedented special planned performance 'Jeon Yoo-sung Free Jeon Yoo-sung Show'.

This stage isn’t just a one-off event. It is the dynamic continuation of comedy philosophy that spans generations. Kicking things off with 'Lee Hong-ryul', 'Kim Shin-young', 'Shin Bong-sun', and major comedians including the comedy trio 'Zoltan' (Lee Jae-hyung, Han Hyun-min, Jung Jin-wook) will all take part. They are all 'direct students' who received Jeon Yoo-sung’s unconventional humor codes firsthand at school and in theater troupes, and they plan to transform their deep respect for their mentor into laughter of their own distinctive style.

As if mirroring Jeon Yoo-sung’s own path of relentlessly breaking established comedic rules, the planning intent behind this show is also unique. Last year, while preparing for 'Comedy Book Concert' on the 'BUCOPe' stage, he was hospitalized after suddenly developing pleurisy, drawing public concern. In his stead, the juniors have stepped up themselves. As if quashing fake news—such as death rumors that surfaced irresponsibly in some corners—his students will fill the empty spots onstage without a gap, in place of their mentor, who is currently devoting himself to recovery.

After he previously impressed his juniors with the 'Jeon Yoo-sung’s Show Show Show' marking the 50th anniversary of his debut in 2019, he has now taken a step back to watch his students’ tributes. Even though the 'Jeon Yoo-sung Free Jeon Yoo-sung Show' will not have the mentor himself appear onstage, paradoxically, his deep persona and comedic spirit are expected to overwhelm the audience seats more powerfully than ever.
