'K-Comedy' Bounces to a New Era, With Busan Leading Asia’s Laughter

A new renaissance for 'K-comedy'—Busan takes the lead in Asia’s laughter

The map of South Korea’s comedy landscape is being rewritten. Starting next month on the 21st, 'the 14th Busan International Comedy Festival (BICF)' opens in grand fashion at the Busan BEXCO Auditorium. More than just a festival, it is a large-scale experiment that is set to change the paradigm of the industry. Over 10 days, the event is expected to become an overwhelming stage where past legacies and future trends collide and fuse.

According to a blueprint unveiled by Busan Metropolitan City on the 15th, this year’s core theme is 'transcending generations'. Legendary comedians who carved out their ground on tough stages and emerging players who have taken hold of today’s digital trends will share the same space. A variety of plans—including 'comedy street', which spills out from theaters into the streets, and 'open concerts', which directly connect with the public—transform Busan as a whole into a massive melting pot of laughter.

The most noteworthy part is an ambitious vision aimed at building a sustainable ecosystem. BICF is set to break the limits of a one-off event and push for the establishment of dedicated theaters within Busan. The move signals a strong commitment to complete an 'Asia’s leading comedy hub' in which performances and creation, education and distribution cycle as one.

To that end, it will run a tight system for discovering new talent based on a dedicated platform, and expand its territory beyond the limits of offline stages into a video and digital ecosystem. Improving its lineup with 'digital content' is the most reliable tool to secure the self-sustaining power of K-comedy.

Key figures including BICF executive committee chairperson 'Kim Junho' said, "This year is a decisive turning point that brings together Korea’s comedy tracks and presents a future blueprint," adding, "We will engrave Busan as the heart of Asia’s comedy industry, in name and in reality."
