'Train to Busan' Set for 4K Re-Release in Major Overseas Markets for 10th Anniversary

The film that sparked a K-zombie craze in South Korea, 〈Train to Busan〉 (directed by Yeon Sang-ho), is marking its 10th anniversary with a 4K remastered re-release in major overseas markets. Contents Panda, the overseas sales and distribution affiliate of investor-distributor NEW, officially announced the news on the 20th and unveiled release dates for a phased international rollout that includes North America.

First released domestically on July 20, 2016, 〈Train to Busan〉 became the first Korean zombie film to surpass 10 million admissions and opened the door to Yeon Sang-ho's distinct universe, dubbed the "Yeoniverse" (Yeon Sang-ho universe). The film laid the groundwork for international success after being invited to the Midnight Screening section at the Cannes Film Festival and receiving praise from Hollywood figures such as Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright, as well as novelist Stephen King.

The 10th anniversary re-release will be presented in a 4K remastered version with sharper picture and higher-quality sound, giving theatergoers an intensified sense of suspense. It will open in the Philippines on August 5, then in North America on August 14, Japan on August 21, and Italy on September 2. Spain, along with major Latin American markets including Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Peru, are also coordinating release dates.

The expansion in the North American market is particularly notable. While the film's 2016 run in North America was a limited release, this re-release will open wide on more than 500 screens — an increase of more than tenfold. The re-release is also being promoted with a special poster by illustrator Oliver Barrett, known for his work with A24 and Netflix.
