Raw terror forged in a sealed-off space: The essence of Irish horror
Horror film 'Hokum', which digs into a chilling secret tied to a forbidden area of a remote hotel, meets audiences exclusively through Lotte Cinema on the 22nd.
The film spotlights strange events that unfold when best-selling author 'Om Baumann' ('Adam Scott') stays at a sparsely populated hotel in Ireland in order to bury his parents’ remains. This is a place that contains the 'suite room', which had long been sealed away after a witch was reportedly bound there.
An everyday routine that looks calm turns into collapse as hotel staff Fiona suddenly disappears. Following clues to the disappearance, 'Om Baumann' steps into the forbidden 'suite room' and faces supernatural visions that cannot be explained by reason alone.
Beyond a simple missing-person case, 'Hokum' delivers an extreme level of immersion with psychological pressure that digs into the depths of the human mind. The overpowering presence emanating from the unknown, the visual hallucinations the protagonist experiences, and suspicious characters build a tight, suspenseful atmosphere. In particular, jump scares that appear without warning, the visual texture of the 'suite room' with its light cut off, and finely tuned sound direction that scratches at the nerves invite viewers right into the heart of fear.
Irish-born director 'Damian McCarthy', who has established a distinctive horror aesthetic through 'Warning' (2020) and 'Oddity' (2024), helmed the project. Earlier this month, the film received an official invitation in the competition section of the 30th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), 'Bucheon Choice World: Feature Films,' proving both its artistic merit and its buzz.
