Childhood innocence shattered in a thriller of extreme intelligence and physical strength
Global streaming platform Disney+ is raising the stakes. Its brutal survival competition, ‘Tag Game,’ goes beyond a simple childhood pastime and premieres next month on the 30th.
The series is based on the familiar game of tag, but beneath it lies a high-stakes psychological battle and an overwhelming test of physical ability. Its biggest draw is its status as an “immersive pursuit survival competition” that maximizes the primal fear of being both the pursuer and the pursued.
The lineup of contestants is just as notable. Former professional baseball player Hwang Jae-gyun leads a cast that includes actors Kyung Soo-jin and Yoon Sang-hyun, as well as Lee Jun-soo, the son of Lee Jong-hyuk whose appearance taps into viewers’ nostalgia. Former national wrestling team member Jang Eun-sil and announcer Park Ji-min add to the cast, keeping the tension high.
The drive to survive is even stronger among the creators and former special forces personnel. YouTubers Pani Bottle, Kim Tol-tol and Malwang join singers Yang Da-il and Ji Ji-won, UDT-trained broadcaster Yook Jun-seo and national beach volleyball player Shin Ji-eun in a brutal competition that brings together strong contenders from a range of fields.
Producer-director Hyun Jung-wan, regarded as a master of the survival genre, is at the helm. After scoring consecutive hits with every season of ‘Blood Game,’ he is drawing industry attention over what new spin his direction will bring to ‘Tag Game.’
