'InuYasha' and 'Digimon' make Korean theatrical debuts two decades later — classics set to take over September theaters

Legendary animated films that dominated living rooms more than 20 years ago are making a spectacular return to the big screen. From 'InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time' making its first theatrical appearance in Korea to a double feature of 'Digimon' films, theaters in September will become a vast showcase of nostalgia.

2000s fantasy returns to the big screen as 'InuYasha' and 'Digimon' make comebacks

On Sept. 9, 'InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time' will open exclusively at CGV. Based on the manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi, the first film in the series, produced in 2001, follows the half-demon InuYasha and the girl Kagome as they face the demon Menomaru. Remarkably, this marks the film's 'first theatrical release in Korea'. Starting Sept. 16, Megabox will screen 'Digimon Adventure: Our War Game! & The Golden Digimentals'. The double feature combines two films released in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and carries significant historical value as an early directorial work by Hosoda Mamoru.

Timeless emotion as acclaimed animated classics return to theaters

A wave of rereleases of acclaimed films with proven artistic merit is also continuing. 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time', the film that established director Hosoda Mamoru as a global master, returns to theaters on Sept. 16. The time-leaping coming-of-age fantasy became a phenomenon when it was released in 2007, drawing 50,000 moviegoers. 'A Letter to Momo', which captivated 300,000 viewers in 2012, will also return to theaters on Sept. 2. Its extraordinary story of a family living alongside mysterious creatures on an island offers a warm meditation on family and comfort.

Diverse lineup ranges from sports showdowns to new K-animation film 'Ghost Band'

Megabox Hongdae will host a 'Sports Animation Showcase' starting Sept. 7. Dynamic sports titles including the 'Yowamushi Pedal' series and 'Tsurune the Movie: The First Shot' are targeting devoted fans. Meanwhile, a homegrown newcomer is making its mark amid the nostalgic classics. 'Ghost Band,' which premiered at Lotte Cinema on Aug. 26, follows Mita, a singer-songwriter who can see spirits, as she forms a band. The participation of Yoon Sang and Kyoung Seo in the music heightens the film's sonic appeal, while director Geum Dong-ho, who led 'Heartsping: Teenieping of Love,' demonstrates the strength of polished K-animation.
