Gyeonggi’s Korea AI Content Awards draws 1,528 entries, delivers surprise among top 1%

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping the paradigm of the video content industry, drawing the attention of creators worldwide to Gyeonggi province. Gyeonggi province officially announced on the 27th that it received 1,528 entries for the international Korea AI Content Awards, to be held over two days starting Oct. 15 at Lotte Cinema in Suwon, and that only 20 works will advance to the finals after rigorous judging.

The awards were created as a major competition to discover film and video content made with generative artificial intelligence and support innovative exchanges between global creators and industry professionals. During the submission period from June 1 to July 22, a large number of works from around the world were entered in categories including the mid-length and short-film competitions and the Nam June Paik Special Award, generating significant interest.

Of the 20 works that advanced to the finals after passing a rigorous review by experts, placing them among the top 1%, a total of 11 will receive final awards: six short films, three mid-length films and two Nam June Paik Special Award winners. The Nam June Paik Special Award has drawn unusual attention across the cultural sector because it honors works that carry forward the experimental spirit of Nam June Paik, a pioneer of media art, in the age of AI.

During the event, the finalists will screen in theaters, and creators will speak directly with audiences in guest-viaitor sessions (GV). An industry forum will also be held alongside the screenings, offering an in-depth look at how AI technology is changing the content production environment and at future industry trends, while adding academic and practical value to the event. Kang Ji-sook, director of Gyeonggi province’s Content Industry Division, said, "The vast number of entries, far exceeding expectations, demonstrates the worldwide desire to create content incorporating AI." She stressed, "I hope these screenings and forums become a turning point for witnessing the new vision that collaboration between human creativity and artificial intelligence can offer the content industry of the future."
