BTS sets new Oricon record in Japan, sweeps three VMAs in U.S. global run

Global supergroup BTS has reached another milestone on Japan’s Oricon charts.

According to Oricon on Sept. 28, BTS’ title track “Boy With Luv (Feat. Halsey)” from the mini album “MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA” surpassed 1 million cumulative points on the latest Weekly Combined Singles Ranking, dated Sept. 28. The chart combines streaming and digital download figures. With the achievement, BTS now has four singles that have surpassed 1 million points, following “Lights / Boy With Luv,” “Dynamite” and “Butter (Permission to Dance).” That is the highest number of titles by an overseas artist in the history of Oricon’s combined singles category. The song is also close to surpassing 300 million cumulative plays on the Weekly Streaming Ranking.

Alongside the new record in Japan, BTS received more good news from a U.S. awards show. At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, held Sept. 27 local time at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, BTS won Song of the Year with “SWIM,” the title track from its fifth full-length album, becoming the first K-pop group to claim the trophy. The group also swept all three categories in which it was nominated, including Best K-Pop and Best Group. The Best Group win was its fifth in the category, extending its record for the most wins in the award’s history.

BTS’ global run is also extending to Australia. The group was nominated for Most Popular International Artist at the 2026 ARIA Awards, Australia’s most prestigious music awards, joining global pop stars including Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and Olivia Rodrigo. The ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 18 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia.
