“Best Song of the 21st Century” continues its unstoppable run
“Hype Boy,” a megahit by girl group NewJeans, has surpassed 800 million streams on Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform, reaffirming its enduring global success. ADOR, the group’s agency, said on the 1st that the song had recorded 800,020,045 cumulative plays as of the 29th of last month.
It is the group’s fourth song to reach the 800 million mark, following “OMG”, “Ditto” and “Super Shy.” The milestone shows that the song remains firmly embedded in playlists around the world despite the considerable time that has passed since its release.
Released in August 2022 as one of the three title tracks from the group’s debut album, “New Jeans,” “Hype Boy” captivated listeners with its distinctive blend of moombahton and electropop. The song swept major South Korean music charts soon after its release and further demonstrated its musical polish by earning a place on “The Best Songs of the 21st Century,” a list selected last year by Rolling Stone, a leading U.S. music magazine.
Meanwhile, the combined cumulative number of Spotify plays for every song NewJeans has released to date has surpassed a staggering 8 billion. The group has sparked a phenomenon with every release since its debut and helped reshape the global pop market. Worldwide attention now turns to what comes next.
