Pioneer of Korean rock, vocalist who shone brightest onstage

Park Young-chul, vocalist of Black Syndrome, the band that led the renaissance of Korean heavy metal, has died. He was 61.

According to his family, Park died suddenly on the night of the 6th. His wife, Kim Eun-hee, said, “He had low blood pressure and diabetes and received regular medical care, but there had been no major concerns about his health. He suddenly passed away the night before, and we still can’t believe it. We’re overwhelmed with grief.”

“He was a loving husband who always came to meet me when I got off work and a good father,” she added. “He was someone who looked only to music throughout his life, without great ambitions. He performed onstage last month and had another show scheduled this month, so it breaks my heart that he had to leave us so suddenly.”

Park was a founding member of Black Syndrome, which he formed in 1986. The band launched its full-fledged music career in 1988 with the release of its debut studio album, Fatal Attraction. Alongside Sinawe, Boohwal and Baekdusan, the group is regarded as a pioneer that helped put down roots for rock in South Korea’s barren popular-music scene in the late 1980s.

In particular, signature songs such as Rock The Speed and I'm Your Man gave voice to the repressed emotions of young people at the time through their raw sound and explosive energy.

After leaving the band for a time, Park rejoined in the early 2000s and continued his musical journey. Following the release of the band’s ninth studio album, 9th Gate, in 2001, he demonstrated his staying power in 2018 by releasing Episode, the band’s 10th studio album and its first in 17 years, to mark the 30th anniversary of its formation. He was a true craftsman who steadfastly preserved the legacy of Korean heavy metal, insisting on live performance stages rather than media or television appearances.

Popular-music experts also praised Park’s accomplishments. Park Seong-seo, a critic of popular music, said Park “emerged when Korea was a wasteland for rock music and played a pivotal role in diversifying and advancing the group sound of the 1980s.” He also recalled that Park “built a broad fan base centered on live performances, and his vocals left a deep impression with their distinctive power and volume, which overwhelmed even the rough sound.”

Park’s funeral has been arranged in Room 2 at Hanil Hospital Funeral Hall in Dobong-gu, Seoul. The funeral procession will be held at 2 p.m. on the 8th, with Seoul Municipal Crematorium designated as the final destination.
