A war of words over the attack on a Taiwanese comedian who has satirized Chinese President Xi Jinping is intensifying across the Taiwan Strait. After Taiwan’s government called the incident an instance of China’s “transnational repression,” Beijing strongly objected, calling the accusation a malicious smear ahead of an election.

Dispute over “transnational repression” emerges as key factor in Taiwan election
According to China’s State Council on the 28th, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, flatly rejected claims by Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at a regular press briefing. “Every time there is an election, Taiwan uses baseless pretexts to smear mainland China and stoke cross-strait confrontation,” he said. He described the so-called transnational-repression narrative as a deceptive tactic to promote Taiwan independence and pursue political self-interest.
The dispute began with an attack on Taiwanese comedian Huang Yi-hao on the 11th of last month, staged to look like a traffic accident. On the 21st, Taiwanese prosecutors indicted five people suspected of plotting and carrying out the attack. Investigators found that a person identified as “K,” said to be from mainland China, promised to pay a Taiwanese accomplice NT$450,000 (about 18 million won) and gave specific instructions to break Huang’s arms and legs to prevent him from performing.
Taiwan’s government considers the incident a serious assault on democracy. At a regular DPP meeting, President Lai Ching-te criticized the attack as a typical Chinese tactic aimed at undermining confidence in Taiwan’s system. He stressed that China’s interference goes beyond manipulating election results and is intended to spread disinformation and fuel social divisions.
Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung also said in a report to the Legislative Yuan that the attack was an attempt to suppress an individual’s safety and freedom of expression. With Taiwan’s local elections scheduled for next month, the incident is expected to further heighten tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
