[Interview] “I believed the box-office myth from 100 years ago would return.” Director Yasuda Junichi of “Samurai Timeslipper” ②

At the end of last year, at the Japan Academy, the awards beat hot releases such as “Last Mile” and “Kingdom 4” to win seven categories: best picture, best director, best screenplay, best actor, best cinematography, best lighting, and best editing.
This is a structure that connects the filming set of the late Edo period with that of a modern-day historical drama. The former is an era in which the shogunate was in decline ahead of the Meiji Restoration, while the latter is a period that came after the heyday of 1970s-80s historical dramas—when...

With a production budget of 3 million yen (about 28.5 million won), the film pulled in a staggering 3 billion yen (about 28.4 billion won) at the box office, rewriting Japanese film history.
Even watching it again is surprising. 〈Don’t stop the camera. 〉(2017) is the case in point. With a modest production budget of 3 million yen (about 28. 5 million won), the film—made as a workshop project and initially screened in two theaters—went on to rake in a whopping 3 billion yen (about 28.
Kim Ji-yeon’s Jewel Box: Jang Yo-hun, a Box-Office-Level Presence in Short Films

Kim Ji-yeon’s Jewel Box: Jang Yo-hun, a Box-Office-Level Presence in Short Films

I’m curious about people. Even actors who are already attracting attention may be at their least-famous moment right now. "Kim Ji-yeon’s Jewel Box" spotlights actors who keep reaching new heights. Consider these breakout picks chances to buy the dip.
“Gibeu aen teikeu, ssinyeonbara!” Lines such as “My child’s father is extremely angry,” “School Rights Protection Bureau inspector! I’m Im Han-lim—!” and the stammering “Ju-, ju-, ju-, a juvenile offender” spawned countless memes from 〈Teach You a Lesson〉, but there’s one moment that should have...

[Seong Chan-eol’s Comics] I hesitated to recommend it, but 30,000 moviegoers leaves me saying ‘Give it a try’: 「The Dangers in My Heart」

[Seong Chan-eol’s Comics] I hesitated to recommend it, but 30,000 moviegoers leaves me saying ‘Give it a try’: 「The Dangers in My Heart」

I go crazy for subculture. I check out anything with fresh stories, settings or characters — not only films but webtoons, games, comics and animation. I entered the world of fandom through comics: as an adult I read comics as e-books and webtoons on my smartphone, a self-described 'kidult.' But it's less fun alone. I write Seong Chan-eol's Comics to share things that are more enjoyable together, seen from the perspective of an omnivorous fan.
To be frank, this is one of my current favorite comics, but it’s one I avoided writing about for a while. It’s wildly fun and genuinely heart-fluttering, but the barrier to entry is high. If even I, a fan of the series, felt that hesitation, I wasn’t sure how many readers would go along with it.
[Kim Ji-yeon's Treasure Box] The Actor Buzzworthy Dramas Discovered First: Chae Seo-an of 'Brave New World' and 'The Great Lady of the 21st Century'

[Kim Ji-yeon's Treasure Box] The Actor Buzzworthy Dramas Discovered First: Chae Seo-an of 'Brave New World' and 'The Great Lady of the 21st Century'

I'm curious about people. Even actors already drawing attention can still be at their most obscure. 'Kim Ji-yeon's Treasure Box' spotlights performers whose profiles are still rising. Consider this an early look at actors whose careers are climbing fast.
An intriguing new actor is emerging fast. After making a meteoric entrance as the plaintive 'Mrs. Hak' in 〈Completely Fooled〉, Chae Seo-an went on to play IU's not-quite-hateful, slightly obnoxious new sister-in-law in 〈The Great Lady of the 21st Century〉 and has kept turning up in one buzzy...

A Borderless Art Language: The Work of Albert Serra, Part 2

〈Pacifiction〉 and 〈The Afternoon of Solitude〉 pulled off back-to-back feats by topping “Cahiers du cinéma”’s Best 10 lists.
〈Waiting for Sancho〉’s production process and behind-the-scenes stories are included in a documentary he made himself: the film critic Mark Peranson, who serves as editor of the film magazine “Cinemascop,” appeared in the movie as the character Joseph.
[Sung Chan-eol's Comics] 「Kindergarten WARS」 Turns Body Count Into Bizarre Rom-Com Fun

[Sung Chan-eol's Comics] 「Kindergarten WARS」 Turns Body Count Into Bizarre Rom-Com Fun

I'm obsessed with subculture. If a story or character feels fresh—whether in film, webtoons, games, comics, or animation—I check it out. Comics opened the world of fandom to me, and now I'm a kid-at-heart adult who reads paper volumes as e-books and webtoons on my phone. But it's less fun alone. I write [Sung Chan-eol's Comics] to share what’s more enjoyable experienced together, from the perspective of an enthusiastic generalist.
If someone asked me to sum up this comic, I'd probably hesitate and finally say, "It's fun. " It is fun. But it's not easy to explain. When I try to list impressions I come up with words that don't normally go together—funny, sweet, scary, brutal—so it's hard to convey.

[Interview] Yeon Sang-ho on 〈Gunche〉②: 'Seo Young-chul Is a Demagogue and the Swarm's Error ... I Wanted to Show the Fear of a Society Bound Only by Universal Thinking.'

※ The interview with 〈Gunche〉 director Yeon Sang-ho continues from Part 1. It's been 10 years since 〈Train to Busan〉. Did returning to zombies come with any pressure. "I didn't come in thinking, 'I have to do something new.
[Interview] Taking on Comedy Acting Full Force! Park Ji-hyun ① in <Wild Sing>

[Interview] Taking on Comedy Acting Full Force! Park Ji-hyun ① in

Park Ji-hyun’s recent moves come as a surprise. The elegant yet mesmerizing character in 〈Hidden Face〉 that earned her the Best Supporting Actress award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, a terminally ill role in 〈Eunjoong and Sangyeon〉 that spans her life trajectory from her 20s to her 40s, and even...
