Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube stars in the new 'War of the Worlds' movie, which has been released on Amazon Streaming. This work, adapted from H.G. Wells' classic novel, is produced in the screenlife thriller genre.
Produced by 'Searching' producer Timur Bekmambetov and directed by Richie Li, Ice Cube plays the role of Will Radford, a terrorism analyst working for the Department of Homeland Security. Will is responsible for monitoring a system that surveils American citizens.
The film unfolds through a computer screen format, where Will observes the alien invasion situation from his desktop. He is also a worried father monitoring his pregnant daughter, Faith (Iman Benson), and his tech-savvy son, Dave (Henry Hunter Hall).
The story begins with Will's routine task of tracking a hacker known as 'Disruptor'. This hacker threatens to expose a secret government program that collects data on American citizens. Will tracks the hacker's signals while video calling his boss (Clark Gregg) and field agent Jeffries (Andrea Savage).
About 20 minutes into the film, fireballs start falling from the sky, destroying buildings and causing chaos worldwide. NASA official Sandra Salas (Eva Longoria) had warned of unusual signs in advance, but Will dismissed it, saying, 'It's my job to monitor people, not the weather.'
Will witnesses people being sacrificed in the meteor shower attack through low-quality videos. News reports convey the military response situation worldwide. A scene also appears where a shiny battle machine with three legs emerges from the first asteroid and fires lasers.
Even in a situation where countless people are sacrificed, Will primarily focuses on ensuring the safety of his children, Faith and Dave. He also tries to contact Faith's boyfriend, Mark (Devon Bostick), who drives an Amazon Prime delivery vehicle.
In the middle of the film, Faith goes into labor during the alien invasion. Will finds himself in a situation where he must monitor his daughter's heart rate while handling a call with the President of the United States.
The screenplay is written by Kenneth A. Gold and Mark Hyman. Hyman previously shared story credits on 'Meet the Fockers'. The film modernly updates the premise that an invasion can be thwarted through a virus.
This work is a new adaptation of H.G. Wells' 'War of the Worlds', which caused panic among listeners when Orson Welles broadcast it on the radio in 1938. Amazon Prime subscribers must also watch a 2-minute advertisement before viewing.
