Singer G-Dragon's (GD) upcoming concert in Hong Kong has led to a surge in ticket sales fraud and scalping, becoming a social issue.
Local Hong Kong media outlets 'Ming Pao' and 'Sing Tao Daily' reported on the 7th that over 30 reports of ticket fraud related to G-Dragon's concert, scheduled to be held at the AsiaWorld-Expo from the 8th to the 10th, have been filed with the Hong Kong police. The total amount of damages has been estimated at 610,000 Hong Kong dollars (approximately 1,077,000 USD).
Victims primarily started transactions after seeing concert ticket sale posts on social media platforms like Facebook, only to fall victim to scams. Scammers used tactics of demanding additional deposits after the initial transaction, extorting more money from the victims. In one case, a woman suffered a loss of 180,000 Hong Kong dollars (approximately 31,800 USD).
Tickets for G-Dragon's concert, which is being held in Hong Kong for the first time in 8 years, sold out immediately after sales began. Consequently, scalpers are reselling tickets at prices ranging from 2 to 5 times the original price.
In particular, on the last day of the concert, VVIP seats were reported to have scalped tickets at a 'crazy price' of 120,000 Hong Kong dollars (approximately 21,000 USD), according to 'Ming Pao'.
This scalping issue is not only serious in Hong Kong but has also appeared at alarming levels in other regions. Previously, in Taiwan, a scalper was caught after purchasing G-Dragon concert tickets in bulk and reselling them at high prices, making an unjust profit of 20 million New Taiwan dollars (approximately 9 million USD).
The scalper sold tickets worth 8,980 New Taiwan dollars (approximately 420 USD) for at least 55,000 New Taiwan dollars (approximately 2,580 USD) and was found to have produced counterfeit identification cards to provide to buyers.
Amid the implementation of a real-name system for concert tickets, rumors spread online that audience members who purchased scalped tickets were actually allowed into the concert venue. Following this, the organizers strengthened identity verification procedures for audience entry, leading to a flood of refund requests from scalpers, and Taiwanese authorities also launched a full investigation.
G-Dragon has been conducting his world tour 'Ubermensch' since his concert at Tokyo Dome in Japan last May.
