Actor Won Bin has returned to the advertising world after 15 years, but there are criticisms that his title as a 'national treasure actor' is losing its meaning as he appears as a model for a shabu-shabu advertisement.
Recently, a shabu-shabu brand selected Won Bin as its exclusive model. The brand stated, "We have brought the national treasure actor beloved by Korea, the symbol 'Won Bin-nim'," and promoted, "Is there anyone in Korea who doesn't know Won Bin?"
However, voices of disappointment are emerging among industry insiders and fans. Won Bin has been absent from the screen for 15 years since the 2010 film 'The Man from Nowhere'. During this time, he has maintained his fame as a Hallyu star and the title of 'national treasure actor'.
Some are reacting that it is "embarrassing to hold the title of national treasure actor" as Won Bin only engages in advertising activities without acting. The fact that he has become a model for a shabu-shabu brand, rather than a fashion brand or luxury goods, has become the center of controversy.
Won Bin has established himself as a representative actor of Korea by appearing in numerous masterpieces such as 'Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War', 'Mother', and 'The Man from Nowhere'. He gained explosive popularity both domestically and internationally with his outstanding looks and acting skills.
However, since 2010, he has only met the public through advertisements and some event participations without any work activities. Fans have been waiting for Won Bin's return to the screen for a long time, but no specific return plans have been announced.
Meanwhile, Won Bin married actress Lee Na-young in 2015 and has one son. He is currently known to be living a quiet life with his family.
