The film 〈Yangyang〉 is gaining attention as it thoughtfully depicts the stories of women that our society needs, rewriting the names of women erased by the times alongside 〈The Master of the World〉. Directed by Yang Joo-yeon, 〈Yangyang〉 is her debut work, selected for prestigious film festivals both domestically and internationally, including the 32nd Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, and is drawing attention as a women's narrative currently coloring the theaters alongside 〈The Master of the World〉.
First, 〈The Master of the World〉 is a film that tells the story of an enigmatic eighteen-year-old high school girl, 'Juin', who begins to receive mysterious notes after refusing to participate in a signature campaign involving the entire student body. This is the third feature drama by director Yoon Ga-eun, known for 〈Our Body〉 and 〈Our Home〉, which portrays the hidden story of the protagonist 'Juin' and the perceptual shifts in the world surrounding her with a kind and meticulous gaze, garnering widespread acclaim. 〈Yangyang〉 is a documentary that follows 'Juyeon', who learns about her aunt 'Jiyoung' for the first time through a late-night phone call from her father, discovering countless names that have not been recorded along with the erased traces of her aunt. The film re-records the time of aunt 'Jiyoung', who became a family taboo due to having taken her own life in the past, bringing to light the memories of discrimination and violence inflicted on women from the past to the present under the shadow of patriarchy, retracing the place of women in our society. Furthermore, starting from the story of aunt 'Jiyoung', it connects the narratives of countless women who resemble her, as well as those living in today's unchanged reality, evoking brilliant empathy.
