The latest installment of the 〈Predator〉 series, 〈Predator: Badlands〉, has surpassed 1 billion won in global revenue in its first week, becoming the highest-grossing film in the series' history.
Released on the 7th in 3,725 theaters across North America, 〈Predator: Badlands〉 generated 40 million dollars (approximately 583 billion won) in sales over its opening weekend. When combined with global revenue, the total reached 80 million dollars (approximately 1,166 billion won).
This surpasses the previous record of 38 million dollars for the North American opening weekend of the 2004 film 〈Alien vs. Predator〉, marking the best performance in the 38-year history of the Predator series.
The film's positive reception is cited as a key factor in its box office success. It received an 'A-' score in exit polls conducted by market research firm CinemaScore, indicating strong audience approval.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this new release received a 'PG-13' rating, allowing it to reach a broader audience compared to previous Predator series films, which were mostly rated 'R' for restricted audiences. Additionally, the high proportion of premium format screenings such as IMAX, Dolby, and 3D contributed to increased box office revenue.
Peter Debruge, chief film critic for 'Variety', described this film as "the most interesting and powerful movie among those with 'Predator' in the title since the original in 1987."
The Predator series has continued for 38 years since the first film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, with sequels, reboots, and crossovers with 'Alien', and is currently produced by 20th Century Studios under Disney.
