Edward Yang's masterpiece film 〈A One and a Two〉 (2000) will return to domestic theaters on December 31 in a 4K remastered version. Distributor Emu Films stated, "To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its release, we are presenting this masterpiece that represents the era once again." 〈A One and a Two〉 is set against the backdrop of Taipei, Taiwan, capturing the inner thoughts and moments of change of each family member through the lens of 8-year-old Yang Yang as he takes family photos. This film delicately portrays the joys and sorrows of daily life, growth, and family, winning the Best Director award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and consistently appearing on lists of the greatest works of the 21st century.
The film first premiered in Korea in October 2000 and was re-released once in June 2018, but it is returning now with a clearer quality in 4K remaster to mark its 25th anniversary. The film industry and critics have praised it as "a representative masterpiece of contemporary East Asian cinema," commending its excellent portrayal of themes such as family traces and intergenerational communication. Director Edward Yang has also built his reputation with films like 〈The Murder Case of the High-Rise Building〉 (1991), 〈The Terrorizers〉 (1994), and 〈Mahjong〉 (1996), with 〈A One and a Two〉 being the most beloved film in his filmography.
An Emu Films representative stated, "The 4K version has already been screened overseas and has delivered deep emotions. Domestic audiences will have another opportunity to experience the true value of this masterpiece." The re-release of 〈A One and a Two〉 is expected to provide unforgettable year-end moments not only for Asian film fans but also for Korean audiences.
