So Ji-sub PICK ‘My Name is Maria’, releasing on November 26 to coincide with ‘Week of Eliminating Violence Against Women’!

The film 〈My Name is Maria〉 depicts the true story of ‘Maria Schneider’, who was overlooked by the world, behind the scenes of 〈The Last Tango in Paris〉.

The film 〈My Name is Maria〉, which will be released during the ‘Week of Eliminating Violence Against Women’ starting November 25, has unveiled a special poster, raising expectations. The film 〈My Name is Maria〉 portrays the true story of ‘Maria Schneider’, who was overlooked by the world, behind the scenes of ‘The Last Tango in Paris’. At the age of 19, she gained global attention by being cast in Bernardo Bertolucci's film, but she delicately unfolds the humiliation and violence she experienced in scenes not included in the script, as well as her life thereafter. French rising star Anamaria Bartolomei, who played ‘Kai’ in Bong Joon-ho's 〈Mickey 17〉, has been cast as Maria Schneider, deeply portraying Maria's unyielding inner self and complex emotions.

November 25 is designated as ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women’ by the UN, and the government operates the ‘Week of Eliminating Violence Against Women (11/25~12/1)’ annually since the implementation of the ‘Basic Law on the Prevention of Violence Against Women’ in 2019. The film 〈My Name is Maria〉, which will be released during this period (November 26), calmly faces violence justified in the name of power and art, and the subsequent lives of women, delivering a message that our society needs to reconsider with deep reflection. Additionally, the film was officially invited to the 26th Seoul International Women's Film Festival, the largest international women's film festival in the world, where it received enthusiastic reviews from audiences, proving the power of the message conveyed by the film, with accolades from leading global media stating, “It delicately unravels the life that endured and overcame the pains of exploitation, trauma, and addiction” (Screenspace).

The special poster released this time recreates a scene from the filming of 〈The Last Tango in Paris〉, arousing curiosity about the film. The image of Maria gazing next to Marlon Brando (actor Matt Dillon) with a slate in hand, accompanied by the copy “You will rise to stardom with him,” raises curiosity about the actual events that took place on set and Maria's true story. In particular, Maria's meaningful expression just before filming heightens expectations for the emotional performance she will showcase.

After winning the Golden Lion at the 78th Venice Film Festival, Bartolomei has expressed her fascination with roles that address social issues, and the film 〈My Name is Maria〉, which deals with the true story of Maria Schneider, will be released on November 26.
