Disney's animated film 〈Zootopia 2〉 has surpassed $1 billion (approximately 1.5 trillion won) in ticket sales at global theaters just 17 days after its release, setting an unprecedented box office record.
According to the U.S. box office tracking company 'Box Office Mojo', 〈Zootopia 2〉, which premiered on the 26th of last month, achieved a revenue of $986.07 million worldwide by the 11th of this month. It recorded $232.67 million in North America and $753.4 million in other regions.
Hollywood trade publication Variety reported that 〈Zootopia 2〉 generated an additional $6.2 million in North America on the 12th, bringing the total box office revenue to over $1 billion when combined with international earnings.
Disney officially announced that 〈Zootopia 2〉 has been listed as the second film this year to surpass $1 billion according to the Motion Picture Association (MPA), following its 〈Lilo & Stitch〉. Notably, it achieved this milestone in the shortest time among all animated and PG-rated films registered with the MPA.
With this, Disney Animation Studios now holds a total of five films that have surpassed $1 billion, including 〈Frozen〉, 〈Frozen 2〉, 〈Moana 2〉, 〈Zootopia〉, and 〈Zootopia 2〉, since 2013.
〈Zootopia 2〉 is particularly achieving remarkable box office results in the Chinese market. Disney stated that this film is currently the second highest-grossing American film (according to MPA standards) released in China, following Marvel Studios' 〈Avengers: Endgame〉, with approximately $447 million in earnings.
