The Guy Who Hooked In, What's Up With That? Director Ryu Hyun-kyung Opens Up About 'Don't Confess'

Actress Ryu Hyun-kyung took on directing, producing, and acting in this film, presenting the most personal and honest story she has told on screen so far.

The film 〈Don't Confess〉 confronts the imperfections and fluctuations of the emotion of confession head-on. Actress Ryu Hyun-kyung took on directing, producing, and acting in this film, presenting the most personal and honest story she has told on screen so far. The starting point of this film came from a real experience. After actor Kim Chung-gil finished shooting a feature film, an incident began when he confessed to Ryu Hyun-kyung the day after the wrap party, leaving a subtle emotional ripple between the two, which soon led to the suggestion, "Let's record this emotion in a film."

〈Don't Confess〉 was filmed based on pre-established relationships and situations, with actors creating their lines on-site according to the flow of emotions. This method produced immediate reactions and unexpected moments in each scene, allowing the film to naturally acquire a comedic rhythm. Regarding this, Ryu Hyun-kyung said, "Since there were no predetermined lines, I was able to focus more on the emotions," and added, "At times, I was confused about whether this scene was acting or a real feeling." This directing style gives 〈Don't Confess〉's dialogue and scenes a unique texture. Instead of perfectly refined sentences, hesitations, silences, and misalignments in speech are captured first, leaving the characters' emotions unexplained on screen.

Regarding her feelings about her first feature direction, she stated, "More than the role of a director, I had a stronger desire to take responsibility for this story until the end," and expressed, "I wanted to record the emotions I felt on set as an actor in a different way." She explained that on set, the focus was on creating an atmosphere that respected each person's feelings rather than forcing someone else's interpretation.

As a result, 〈Don't Confess〉 captured moments where the boundaries between acting and reality blurred, completing a film that leaves emotional space for the audience. The awkwardness and distance that come after a confession, along with emotions that cannot be explained in words, quietly accumulate between scenes, allowing the audience to face the film as if following the flow of those emotions. This attempt has also garnered attention at film festivals. 〈Don't Confess〉 was officially invited to numerous film festivals, including the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival, the 50th Seoul Independent Film Festival, and Namdo Film Festival Season 2, recording sold-out shows amid enthusiastic audience reactions. After the screening, evaluations such as "I don't know where acting ends and reality begins" and "the film that most honestly captured the movement of emotions" followed. A single confession that started in reality, and a record that honestly followed that emotion. The film 〈Don't Confess〉 will meet the audience in theaters on December 17.
