The long-standing couple from 'Stranger Things', Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), have concluded their romance with a "beautiful breakup" instead of an engagement.
On the 25th (local time), 'People' confirmed through an interview with the Duffer Brothers, the producers of 'Stranger Things', that the relationship depicted in Season 5 Volume 2 is a "perfect breakup".
◆ "Will you NOT marry me?"
The talked-about scene appeared in Episode 6. In a life-or-death moment trapped in Hawkins Lab and being consumed by an unidentified substance, Jonathan pulled out the engagement ring he had been carrying since the beginning of Season 5. However, what he offered was not a proposal. Jonathan said, "I've messed things up enough for you, so I want to do something right in the end," and asked, "Nancy Wheeler, will you NOT marry me?"
In response, Nancy accepted this 'Un-proposal' with tears, and the two shared a kiss that might be their last, saying "I love you". (Fortunately, shortly after, the unknown substance solidified, and they saved their lives.)
◆ Duffer Brothers: "Letting go for each other"
Matt Duffer stated in the interview, "It is a clear breakup. They have parted ways." He explained, "Our production team felt that Nancy needed the opportunity to find herself independently, rather than being someone’s partner." Ross Duffer also defined their relationship as a 'Trauma Bond', adding, "The bond formed while fighting monsters in high school is special, but as adults, they needed to let each other go to pursue their own dreams."
◆ What about the possibility of reuniting with Steve?
The article analyzed that just because Nancy broke up with Jonathan, she wouldn't immediately go to 'Steve'. In the show, Nancy clearly stated, "Steve is a good guy, but he wants six kids," indicating that their life directions are different.
Meanwhile, unlike the breakup in the drama, real-life couple actors Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton have maintained their unwavering love since 2017, providing comfort to fans.
