The crazy love at the end of the century that captivated the 90s, 〈Lovers on the Pont Neuf〉 has announced its release this January, unveiling a teaser poster that impressively contrasts light and darkness.
〈Lovers on the Pont Neuf〉 returns to the screen in January with a 4K remaster. This re-release reproduces the aesthetics of fire and darkness designed by director Leos Carax in the best quality, once again summoning the crazy love that thrilled the 90s.
〈Lovers on the Pont Neuf〉 is a film depicting the intense love and brilliant liberation of a painter, Michel, who is losing his sight, and Alex, a homeless man who performs fire shows on the bridge. It is a work that serves as the heart of Leos Carax's early filmography, completing the 'Youth Trilogy' alongside 〈Meeting Boys and Girls〉 and 〈Bad Blood〉. Set against the backdrop of the Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris, now known as a sanctuary for lovers, and the splendid fireworks celebrating the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, it is regarded as a pinnacle of Carax's unique cinematic grammar, which explodes narrative and emotion through intense colors and bodily movements.
When it was released in Korea in 1992, its shocking visuals and overwhelming energy that broke the conventions of mainstream cinema delivered a massive cultural shock to the youth of that time. This work, which caused a syndrome with cafes named after 'Pont Neuf' lining the streets, is remembered as a legendary masterpiece that marked the peak of 90s Korean cinephile culture.
The released teaser poster reflects the Seine River in Paris, where fireworks are unfolding, and the Pont Neuf. It captures the two main characters looking up under the fireworks that adorn the night sky. This fireworks scene, considered a highlight of the film, is set against the backdrop of the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. The image in the poster depicts two souls isolated at the lowest point of society, momentarily enjoying their own liberation while the entire country celebrates the victory of the revolution, as if seen from a third-party perspective. Expectations are building on how the drama of intense isolation, obsession, and the brilliant love and liberation that bloom within it will be completed by the genius director representing the end-of-century sentiment of the 90s.
