2026 Writers Guild Awards: 'Sinners', 'Bugonia', 'One Battle After Another' Among Strong Oscar Contenders

The major nominees for the Writers Guild Awards (WGA) have been announced. Films 〈Sinners〉, 〈Bugonia〉, 〈One Battle After Another〉 will compete for the top award.

According to the nominee list for the 2026 Writers Guild Awards released by the WGA on the 27th (local time), five films have been nominated for the top award in the Original Screenplay category: 〈Sinners〉, 〈Marty Supreme〉, 〈Weapon〉, 〈Black Back〉, 〈If I Had Legs I'd Kick You〉.

In the Adapted Screenplay category, based on other original works, five films have been nominated: 〈Bugonia〉, 〈Frankenstein〉, 〈Hamnet〉, 〈One Battle After Another〉, 〈Train Dreams〉. Notably, 〈Bugonia〉 is a remake of the Korean film 〈Save the Green Planet!〉 directed by Jang Joon-hwan.

In the TV drama series category, five shows have been nominated: 〈Andor〉 (Disney+), 〈The Pit〉 (HBO), 〈Fluribus〉 (Apple TV), 〈Severance〉 (Apple TV), 〈The White Lotus〉. Among these, 〈Fluribus〉 has received nominations in four categories, making it the most nominated work at this year's Writers Guild Awards.

American media have analyzed that the major nominees for the Writers Guild Awards in the film category closely align with the nominees for the Academy Awards (Oscars). The Writers Guild Awards are considered a significant precursor to the Oscars.

In fact, last year, director Sean Baker's 〈Anora〉 won the Writers Guild's Original Screenplay Award and went on to achieve five wins at the Oscars, including Best Screenplay and Best Picture.
