Seoul is set to leap forward as a new global hub for AI-based video creation. The international film festival 'WAIFF Seoul 2026', which highlights the fusion of AI technology and film art, will be held on March 6 and 7 around the Lotte World Tower in Seoul. This event, themed "From Seoul to Cannes", aims to provide a platform to explore the present and future of AI video content.
WAIFF (World AI Film Festival) is a prestigious global film festival that has been held in various locations including Nice, France, Brazil, Japan, and China. It has explored the cinematic possibilities centered around video content utilizing generative AI, and this Seoul edition is planned as an extension of that international network. This film festival is expected to function as a platform to discuss the industrial potential and ethical challenges of AI-based content, addressing timely topics such as the division of roles between humans and AI in the creative process, copyright issues, and new collaboration methods.
The festival is currently calling for submissions in four categories: AI short films, AI shorts series, AI advertisements, and youth AI films. All entries must utilize generative AI technology in their production process, and during the judging process, they will be evaluated comprehensively not only on technical completeness but also on creativity, narrative, and ethical messaging. The submission deadline is until the 10th (Tuesday), attracting attention from AI creators worldwide.
On the first day of the event, March 6, the opening ceremony, screening of finalists, and awards ceremony will take place. On the 7th, there will be expert panel discussions on the AI film industry, demonstrations of the latest technologies, and networking programs connecting creators and industry stakeholders. After the official events, screenings for the general public will continue until March 15, allowing citizens to experience the latest trends in AI films firsthand.
In particular, this 'WAIFF Seoul 2026' adds significance as it is part of a cultural exchange event commemorating the 140th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic relations. Through close cooperation with AI and cultural institutions in France and Europe, the major award-winning works from this Seoul film festival will be officially invited to 'WAIFF Cannes 2026' in April in Cannes, France, where they will be presented to filmmakers from around the world. Major award winners will receive generous benefits including airfare and accommodation for attending the Cannes Film Festival along with prize money. Detailed regulations and schedules can be checked on the official website.
