The master of films like 'Black Swan' and 'The Whale', Darren Aronofsky, has returned with the most controversial tool in Hollywood, 'AI'. This stage is not a screen but YouTube, and the subject is the birth of America 250 years ago.
According to reports from Deadline and TIME on the 30th (Korean time), the production company led by Aronofsky, Primordial Soup, has released the first episode of the animated series 'On This Day... 1776', created in collaboration with Google DeepMind.
◆ AI Draws, Humans Act
This series recreates pivotal moments from the American Revolutionary War in 1776 in a short-form format. The most notable feature is the production method. Aronofsky utilized Google's generative AI models (such as Veo) to depict 18th-century landscapes and battle scenes. However, it is not fully automated. The characters' voices are performed by real actors from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and original scores (music) also involve human composers, attempting to achieve 'the coexistence of technology and art'.
◆ "Meeting History Every Week on That Day"
The release method is also unique. Throughout 2026, episodes will be uploaded weekly to the TIME YouTube channel, precisely on the exact dates (250th anniversary) when events occurred in 1776. The first episode released on the 29th covered the scene of George Washington raising the flag and the backstory of Thomas Paine's 'Common Sense'. Aronofsky stated, "AI is not a replacement for creation, but a tool that expands stories to places we could not go."
◆ Mixed Reactions
The industry's response is heated. While there are praises for the "innovative combination of historical education and storytelling", some criticisms express concerns that "the unique strangeness of AI is felt" and that it "threatens the place of traditional animators".
