Just one day after an interview that was praised for her acting transformation was released, Hollywood rising star Odessa A'zion found herself embroiled in a 'whitewashing' controversy and stepped down from her role.
On the 30th (Korean time), Odessa A'zion officially announced that she would be stepping down from the role of 'Zoe Gutierrez' in the upcoming A24 production 'Deep Cuts'.
◆ "It's Not an Acting Issue... It's a 'Representation' Issue"
The controversy began when it was highlighted that the character she was cast to play has a distinct Mexican identity, while the actress herself is of German and Jewish descent and has no Latin heritage at all. Criticism flooded social media questioning, "Isn't there a Mexican actor in Hollywood? Why did they have to cast a white-passing actor?"
◆ "I Apologize as an Actor and as a Person"
Odessa A'zion stated in a press release, "I overlooked the cultural weight of this role and the issue of representation for the Latin community," adding, "I deeply apologize for my ignorance and insensitivity, and this role rightfully belongs to an actor who shares that culture." The production company A24 expressed respect for the actress's decision and immediately began the recasting process.
