Director Jang Hang-jun's new film 〈The King's Warden〉 has achieved the remarkable feat of surpassing 1 million viewers in its opening weekend, reaching the top of the box office.
According to the integrated ticket sales network on the 9th, 〈The King's Warden〉 attracted over 761,000 viewers from the 6th to the 8th, recording a revenue share of 58.1%. The cumulative number of viewers for this film, which opened on the 4th, has reached over 1 million.
This work is a period drama that depicts the last moments of deposed King Danjong Lee Hong-wi (played by Park Ji-hoon) as he spends time with village chief Eom Heung-do (played by Yoo Hae-jin) and the villagers in his exile in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province during the Joseon Dynasty.
The second place in the weekend box office was taken by the film 〈Choir of God〉, which is based on a fake praise group for foreign currency earning in North Korea. With over 103,000 viewers and a revenue share of 7.9%, this film has continued its steady box office success since its release on December 31 of last year, surpassing a cumulative audience of over 1.115 million.
The melodrama 〈Once We Were Us〉, starring Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, recorded third place with over 82,000 viewers, while the documentary 〈2024.12.03 The Day of the Manipulated Rebellion, Hidden Truth〉 came in fourth with around 80,000 viewers.
The sci-fi thriller 〈Mercy〉, starring Chris Pratt, ranked fifth with over 35,000 viewers. This film unfolds in a future society where artificial intelligence (AI) determines the guilt or innocence of suspects.

Meanwhile, as of 9 AM on the 9th, the top reservation rate is held by Ryu Seung-wan's 〈HUMINT〉, which is set to be released on the 11th with a reservation rate of 41.4%. Starring Jo In-sung, Park Jung-min, and Shin Se-kyung, this film has already secured over 149,000 reserved viewers, generating high expectations. 〈The King's Warden〉 is in second place with a reservation rate of 21.1%, while Kim Tae-yong's 〈Number One〉 is in third with 10.7%.
