In April 1994, the death of Kurt Cobain, the leader of Nirvana, plunged rock fans worldwide into grief, and now, 32 years later, it has resurfaced. The official cause of death was 'shotgun suicide', but claims have emerged that strong circumstantial evidence pointing to 'homicide' has been captured through re-analysis using modern forensic technology.
According to foreign media including the Daily Mail on the 11th (Korean time), a private investigation team composed of forensic expert Brian Burnett and independent researcher Michelle Wilkins announced the results of their comprehensive review of Cobain's autopsy records and scene evidence on the 10th. They strongly suggested that Cobain was not the one who pulled the trigger, but rather that he was murdered and then staged to look like a suicide.
◆ "He was in a state where he couldn't pull the trigger"
The key evidence presented by the investigation team is the necrosis found in Cobain's brain and liver. Wilkins explained, "The organ necrosis confirmed by the autopsy is a typical sign that appears when someone dies slowly from a lethal dose of heroin overdose, rather than instant death from a shotgun." In other words, Cobain was likely in a state of unconsciousness or near death from drug overdose before being shot.
◆ The gun and hands were too clean
Inconsistencies at the scene were also pointed out. Wilkins claimed, "A shotgun suicide scene is usually very gruesome, but Cobain's scene was abnormally clean." In particular, the fact that there was almost no blood on Cobain's left hand, which was holding the gun, led to the analysis that "someone staged the suicide by placing the gun in his hand like a scene from a movie."
Additionally, the controversy over the authenticity of the note left at the scene has reignited. Handwriting analysis revealed that the last four lines of the note were larger and more chaotic than the main text, suggesting that a third party may have added them. The investigation team proposed a shocking hypothesis that "someone must have forcibly administered heroin to Cobain to incapacitate him, then shot him in the head and manipulated the note."

◆ Unyielding police
However, the stance of the investigative authorities is firm. The Seattle police stated, "The detectives concluded that he died by suicide, and this remains the official position to this day," dismissing the possibility of re-investigation. The King County coroner's office also stated, "We will review if new evidence emerges, but the current claims are insufficient to overturn the 1994 death ruling."
Kurt Cobain, a symbol of the '27 Club', left behind a note saying, "It is better to burn out than to fade away." The truth surrounding his death remains an ongoing debate even in 2026, three decades later.
