[First Impressions]

Based on a true story, the film 〈The Ultimate Duo〉 opens on April 2. 〈The Ultimate Duo〉 is a crime investigation drama about two suspects whose intertwined murder case pulls in two detectives—Jae-hyeok (Bae Seong-woo), who gets reassigned to a rural station, and rookie detective “Jung-ho” (Jeong Ga-ram)—as they head to Seoul for an all-out investigation to catch the culprit. Cineplay reporter Seong Chan-eol brings you his thoughts after attending a press screening.

Seong Chan-eol / ★★☆ / It starts out as a buddy story, but it ends up hard-boiled—what a disappointing mismatch

I wonder if the screenplay was never really meant to be a buddy story, and instead planned as a hard-boiled detective tale. That’s when the real value comes out—when you finally see the characters’ multi-layered sides. The part where it even presents moral dilemmas is very impressive, but compared to how intense it feels, it’s just too short. The lingering impact runs deeper than I expected, so the missing pieces feel even bigger.
