The Oscars move on from Hollywood, kicking off the 'Peacock Theater' era starting in 2029

The 'Academy Awards' (Oscars), boasting the highest prestige in the U.S. film industry, has announced a new step forward by moving away from the long-standing 'Dolby Theatre' in Hollywood.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) said it has signed a global partnership with the entertainment group 'AEG', and that starting in 2029 the ceremony will take place at the 'Peacock Theater' in downtown Los Angeles (LA).

The new venue, the 'Peacock Theater', is located near the Crypto.com Arena and is a historic space where the Emmy Awards have been held since 2008. Its capacity is a massive 7,000—twice the scale of the existing 'Dolby Theatre'. The 'Dolby Theatre', long regarded as the home of the Oscars since 2002, has faced criticism over its cramped setup and severe traffic congestion tied to restrictions on Hollywood Boulevard.

By contrast, the area around the new venue is the 'L.A. LIVE' district, packed with hotels, restaurants, and clubs—an infrastructure built to host not only the main ceremony events, but also large-scale side events and festivals.

'Bill Kramer' (Bill Kramer), the Academy’s CEO, said, “Beginning with the 101st Oscars, we will work closely with 'AEG' to transform 'L.A. LIVE' into the perfect venue for a global film festival,” adding his hopes for the future.

Along with the venue change, the broadcast platform is also undergoing major innovation. After ending the contract with 'ABC television network', which has held exclusive broadcast rights for the past 50 years, beginning in 2029 the ceremony will be livestreamed worldwide via the global video platform 'YouTube' (YouTube), continuing bold moves tailored to the digital era.
