Soft-rock duo 'Seals and Crofts', beloved worldwide for hits from the 1970s such as 'Summer Breeze', has lost one of its members, Dash Crofts. International outlets including the Associated Press reported on the 27th (local time) that he passed away at the age of 82.
One pillar of mellifluous harmonies has gone… he rests peacefully beside his family
According to his family and acquaintances, Dash Crofts had been battling an underlying illness in recent days, and passed away peacefully the day before, as his family watched over him in the afternoon. After partner Jim Seals passed away first in 2022, Dash Crofts’ passing meant that the legendary duo that had defined the spirit of the 1970s would be remembered as part of history.
A driving force behind the golden age of mandolin melodies and soft rock
Born in Texas in 1940, Dash Crofts formed a team with Jim Seals in the late 1960s. They rose to stardom after their signature song, 'Summer Breeze', released in 1972, climbed into the upper ranks of the Billboard singles chart. Dash Crofts’ trademark delicate mandolin playing and the two men’s perfectly matched harmonies helped popularize the warm, easygoing 'soft rock' genre amid the rougher currents of rock music at the time.
They continued to pour out numerous hits, including 'Diamond Girl', 'Get Closer', and 'Hummingbird', and reigned as among the top artists of the era, competing for the No. 1 spot in radio airplay during the 1970s. Their music—rooted in lyrical sentiment and emotionally driven melodies—still remains, even decades later, as songs remembered by music fans around the world as symbols of “the ease of a summer day.”
A wave of condolences across the music world… “The most beautiful voice of our time”
Upon hearing the news, music colleagues and fans are expressing deep sorrow through social media. Popular music critics said, “Beyond being a mere performer, Dash Crofts was an artist who created the sensibility of an era through music,” adding, “His mandolin melodies and voice will stay with us forever, like summer wind.”
The bereaved family includes his wife and children, and funeral arrangements will be held quietly according to the wishes of the late artist. Dash Crofts’ ongoing musical journey—one that captured the emotions of 1970s youth—now continues on the heavenly stage.
