This is the buzz-worthy film that captivated international media at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. 〈My Name Is〉 opens in theaters on April 15. The film follows a mother, ‘Jeongsun’ (Yeom Hye-ran), who tries to reclaim the painful memories of Jeju in 1949 that have been completely erased, and an 18-year-old son, ‘Youngok’ (Shin Woo-bin), who wants to erase his old-fashioned name. After watching the film at a press screening preview, Cineplay reporters share their impressions.
Seongchan-eol / ★★★ / A story of violence reframed through 〈Bleak Night〉. A stubborn belief that freedom to forget only comes after you confront it.
Kim Ji-yeon / ★★☆ / On the back of 〈Pokssak〉 drawn by Yeom Hye-ran—still, it’s the surrounding central storyline that gets swallowed up.
Chua Young / ★★☆ / Only Yeom Hye-ran’s solo shines in the aftermath, laying bare the hearts that couldn’t be healed.
