This spring, Director Jeong Ji-young’s new film, 〈My Name Is〉, is set to deliver a heavy, resonant impact at theaters. The film has released the music video for “Friend,” featuring lead actress Yum Hye-ran’s voice. Along with the actor’s emotionally compelling vocals, the story carries a message of solidarity through an all-time highlight ending credit involving more than 10,000 citizens.

“Friend” by the late Min-gi Kim, brought back through Yum Hye-ran’s voice

The released music video opens with a poignant Jeju dialect line: “Mom, live on under Mom’s name now.” In the video, Yum Hye-ran deeply immerses herself in the emotions of the character “Jeong-soon,” continuing to sing in the recording studio. Flowing in the background is the late Min-gi Kim’s beloved track “Friend,” created to commemorate the artist who died prematurely in the 1970s.

The lyrics—“The friend’s image rising before my eyes”—heighten the ache, aligning with Jeong-soon’s story: a woman who carried the pain of Jeju’s April 3 in her heart for 78 years. As Jeong-soon’s silhouette wipes away tears beneath Jeju’s blue sea and sunset, and the figure of her son Yeong-ok wanders into view, the film sparks curiosity about the truth it portrays.

A 5-minute ending woven with 10,000 names… An overwhelming afterglow even Berlin felt

The film’s final moments are marked by a special 5-minute ending credit that moves along with Yum Hye-ran’s song. Here, the names of more than 10,000 citizens who took part in funding the production are engraved one by one. The names of those who came together to support the film serve as a symbolic device—expanding the movie’s commemorative emotion into a message of solidarity in the real world.

This overwhelming ending also left local audiences deeply moved during its screening at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where it was invited in advance. Even after the movie ended, the afterglow that lingered—slow to fade—stands as proof of the work’s completeness, backed by Director Jeong Ji-young’s meticulous direction.

In 1949 Jeju, the mother and child’s trail to find a forgotten name

〈My Name Is〉 tells the story of Yeong-ok, the 18-year-old son whose “gaudy” name became a source of turmoil, and Jeong-soon, the mother who seeks to reclaim the painful memories of Jeju in 1949. Their journey toward the brightest truth can be experienced in theaters nationwide beginning April 15.
