Between the barley fields on the hillside, the dance of actress Yeom Hye-ran, accompanied by a fluttering scarf, painted Berlin. As the prelude of Kim Min-ki's famous song 'Friend' flowed, the audience was filled with emotion. The mournful voice of a woman transcended the screen, honoring the spirits of those unjustly sacrificed during the Jeju 4·3 incident over 70 years ago. It was not just a simple gesture, but a performance of Seungmu (Buddhist dance) that comforted the era and provided deep resonance.
The 76th Berlin International Film Festival saw Director Jeong Ji-young's new film 'My Name' premiere to a warm local reception. In particular, the overwhelming performance of actress Yeom Hye-ran, revealed through the official trailer, was praised for elevating Korea's tragic history of the Jeju 4·3 incident to a universal sentiment.
The film unfolds with a unique synopsis that traverses between the past and present. The protagonist, Jeong-soon, is a character who has raised her grandson, Yeong-ok, alone. One day, she embarks on a journey to recover erased childhood memories with a doctor from Seoul, traveling around Jeju in a white car wearing brown sunglasses. At the end of that journey, she confronts a hidden promise from 50 years ago, completing a narrative of pain and healing through the message, "I will call your lost name." It will meet audiences in Korea in April.
