A Signal of Theater Industry Recovery—Massive Budget Injection Greatly Eases Viewer Burden
The government has moved to deliver major support to bring new momentum to the struggling theater industry. The unprecedented discount tickets, distributed based on a supplemental budget of 27.1 billion won, are expected to dramatically improve citizens’ access to cultural activities.
Major Support Policy to Restore Vitality in the Theater Scene Gets Underway
The government’s proactive policy to boost cultural spending has entered its implementation phase. 'Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism' and 'Korean Film Council' will distribute a total of '6,000 Won Movie-Viewing Discount Ticket'—2.25 million tickets—starting at 10:00 a.m. on the 13th. This follows the key follow-up action taken after securing 'a supplemental budget (additional appropriations)' of 27.1 billion won last month. In addition, another 2.25 million tickets are planned for distribution in July, too, raising expectations for a long-term recovery in demand for theaters.
Guidelines for Reservations at Major Four Multiplex Chains and Smaller Theaters
The discount tickets can be used immediately through the official websites and mobile applications of four major multiplex chains (CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and CineQ) that help drive Korea’s film industry. A complete, detailed list of participating theaters is transparently published on the official website of 'Korean Film Council' (www.kofic.or.kr).
Unprecedented Overlapping Discount Benefits—Watch a Movie for Just 4,000 Won
The strongest advantage of this policy is its broad eligibility for overlapping application with other benefits. When combined with the 'Culture Day' benefit, which is held on the second and last Wednesday of every month, viewers can enjoy movies for the astonishingly low price of just 4,000 won. In addition, overlap application is fully allowed with existing social preference policies such as discounts for people with disabilities, senior citizens, and youth, as well as early-morning (matinee) discounts.
However, overlapping use with discounts from telecom company memberships is fundamentally restricted. If the final payment amount after applying all discounts comes out to less than 1,000 won, it is uniformly adjusted to 1,000 won.
Final Summary and Operation of a Dedicated Help Desk
To fundamentally block any inconvenience citizens might face during the issuance and ticket-reservation process for the large discount tickets, the government has set up a dedicated help desk (02-2135-2618). Through this, the government plans to thoroughly support detailed usage instructions and prompt resolution of any issues.
