'The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic(The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic)' , celebrating its 54th anniversary, will return to the Korean stage again in July, following last year. Composed of 12 cellists from the Berlin Philharmonic, the ensemble is widely known for its flexible, perfectly balanced sound produced by 12 instruments—going beyond the virtuosity of individual soloists. The precise sound crafted by world-renowned masters together will surely offer audiences the wonder of a musical connection.

The ensemble was founded after it performed Julius Klengel’s “Hymn for Twelve Cellos” on a radio broadcast in 1972. From right after its formation, it received worldwide acclaim for its overwhelming tone and sophisticated performance techniques, and to this day it is regarded as the pinnacle of chamber ensembles.

Their biggest appeal lies in a wide-ranging repertoire that breaks down genre boundaries. From traditional classical to jazz, tango, avant-garde, and more, they have perfectly handled a variety of styles, captivating audiences of all generations. Boris Blacher, Jean França , and other world-class contemporary composers have dedicated works to them, and they have proven their musical achievements by winning the Echo Klassik Award three times—an honor of global authority. They also carry out their role as cultural ambassadors faithfully, including accompanying the German Federal President on overseas state visits.

This Korea-in-July performance will feature a diverse program. Familiar classical masterpieces for the public, such as Antonín Dvořák’s “Slavonic Dances” and Erik Satie’s “Gymnopédies”, will be performed, along with Edit Piaf’s chanson “No, I Have No Regrets”. It will also include Ennio Morricone’s film score “Once Upon a Time in America”. Every piece will be carefully arranged specifically for 12 cellos alone, and is expected to deliver a deep resonance that surpasses the original recordings.
